Muzoracle: The Tarot of Music

Beginnings: How to begin.

How to begin. There are different paths available through which the Muzoracle can be learned—which one you choose will depend on how much about music and the esoteric you already know, and how much you’d like to find out. It is quite possible to use the Muzoracle with very little musical expertise, and without delving too deeply into the concepts underlying it. You can use the included Quick Reference on its own to begin, perhaps exploring a sound or two as you go on the site. Or, you may wish to start that way, then add in one of the In Depth or Mechanics to Metaphor pages now and again to deepen your knowledge. Or, if you’re a musician or a composer with a good theory background, you might want to read the entire Mythopoetics from the get go. The Muzoracle is essentially a storytelling tool; it’s effectiveness lies in it’s ability to trigger the intuition and imagination. You don’t need to be an expert in order to experience that—a metaphor here, a sound or two there will do. The advantage of knowing more is that the experience gets richer—but you don’t have to rush.

The first step in learning to cast the Muzoracle is understanding how to lay out the dice and cards. That’s covered here on the site, in the Quick Reference, and in the Mythopoetics. Next, follow the instructions for interpreting castings—they're available in all three places as well. Watching the how-to videos, linked in the red sidebar, is also strongly suggested—simply watching how it’s done will help you master both layout and interpretation quickly.
